GDPR has arrived…
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25 May 2018 and will tighten up the law in many ways. From now on, businesses, public authorities and charities will be put to task as to how they collect, use and share personal information.
The GDPR establishes a set of rules that aim to protect individuals personal information while allowing its free movement. Its objectives are:
(a) to protect individuals fundamental rights and freedoms, in particular their right to the protection of personal data; and
(b) to allow the free movement of personal data between Member States.
Any organisation that chooses to ignore the GDPR will be pursuing a high-risk strategy with the new law imposing heavy fines for non-compliance.
